Introduction

Bridging Understanding Between Continental Philosophy and International Relations (2027) seeks to establish a more stable bridge of mutual understanding between continental philosophy and International Relations (IR) theory. This project aims to initiate the construction of multiple interdisciplinary connections between traditions often treated as unrelated. It positions continental philosophy as a foundational yet underexplored intellectual lineage that has shaped the evolution of IR theory. This edition hopes to encompass the work of key continental thinkers—from Aristotle’s doctrine of the active intellect and phenomenology (Husserl, Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty) to critical theory, Marxism, structuralism, post-structuralism, and feminist philosophy—highlighting their shared concern with subjectivity, power, history, and meaning. It demonstrates how these traditions have informed core IR debates on agency, ethics, ideology, discourse, temporality, and emancipation, influencing approaches ranging from critical and constructivist theory to postcolonial and normative IR. By tracing these intellectual trajectories, the contribution clarifies the enduring impact of continental thought on IR’s epistemological assumptions and opens space for more reflexive and philosophically grounded theorizing.

Objective

The volume welcomes contributions engaging with major continental thinkers and traditions, including—but not limited to—Aristotle’s doctrine of the active intellect; phenomenology (Husserl, Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty); critical theory; Marxism; structuralism and post-structuralism; feminist philosophy; and postcolonial thought. Chapters should explore how these philosophical traditions have shaped and continue to influence key debates in International Relations, including: agency and subjectivity power and ideology ethics and responsibility discourse and representation temporality and historicity emancipation and critique By tracing these intellectual trajectories, the volume aims to clarify the epistemological and ontological assumptions underpinning contemporary IR theory, while opening space for more reflexive, philosophically informed, and critically engaged approaches to the study of global politics.

All proposals should be submitted through the eEditorial Discovery® online submission manager.

ON STRUCTURE

What attracted us to start publishing with IGI Global in the first place is the structure of the chapters published with this publishing house. They always include the methodological part. Adding it as a compulsory thing makes it fascinating, for it gives us a glimpse into the analytical minds of other successful academics who can capture something as elusive as an ongoing conflict.

Authors are encouraged to adopt the following structure when preparing their chapters for submission to IGI Global:
